How many of you remember the tall statue of
St. Joseph that graced the right side of our sanctuary many years ago?
On the left side was the statue of Our Lady of Grace or The Immaculate
Conception.
A friend of mine knew all about the St. Joseph statue. He even had
a photograph of it. Here it is...
When our church was modernized, the old high altar was removed; as was
the altar rail, statues and other objects. The statues, the
altar rail, the crucifix, the candelabra and
other objects were sold. I bought the brass sacramentary stand and
we are using that again now. Other parish members bought some of
the candlesticks and other items.
Our St. Joseph statue was bought for the St. Joseph's Traditional Chapel
in 1988 which was then under Bishop Lefevre who had broken with Rome
because of the Vatican II changes. In 1991, the parishioners of
St. Joseph's Chapel decided to leave Bishop Lefevre's traditional
Catholic movement and return to the Diocese of Richmond. Bishop
Sullivan gave them the Villa church in which to hold services and there
they were given special permission to celebrate the Tridentine Latin
Mass. Since then, this parish has rebuilt a beautiful church on
Buford Road where they have a thriving congregation. So what
happened to the St. Joseph statue?
The statue of St. Joseph was again sold and at this point,
unfortunately, no one know where it is.
Our St. E's altar rail was bought by the
Our Lady of Fatima Traditional Chapel, the original group in the
Richmond area who had allied themselves with Bishop Lefevre. The altar rail was later sold to St. Benedict's Chapel in
Chesapeake.
